Your wish was a command. Just posted a new one. ✌️

How did you find all of this out?? Amazing. I was 12 at the time (?) and really felt the world was going to end. Thanks for all that you post.

Research is a beautiful thing. Exhausting, but wonderful, nevertheless. :)

Good grief Agnes Jupiter Christmas (haha - my mother who was born in Vermillion South Dakota used to say this instead of swearing). Anyhow - wow.

Tell me about it, in the throes of it! Shared this with my 14-year old history buff of a son right before a big history bowl tournament this weekend and he says, thank you, Mr. Volpi:)

Aw, how sweet is that! Ok, tell him I said that he's picked a fantastic subject. History is one of those topics that once it grabs you, it just doesn't let go. It's like time travel but better. You don't even have to get out of bed. LOL ✌️

Expand full comment

Thanks, will do. Yes, he loves it and has been playing history bowls since grade 3. We both share a deep love of ancient history, and agree 💯, I am reveling right now in end of the Assyrian and Babylonian dynasties—the dark ages of Mesopotamia not leaving my sofa for a sec!

Expand full comment

Oh, my. That'll take your knowledge to another level. I revere ancient history and always will. I've done so much reading on it that I can advise college academia, LOL. But let me give you a word of advice. If you care to remember what you're reading and not get lost, take notes.

Without them, in a few years, brain cells get replaced by new ones and there goes all you think you knew. Does that make sense? In other words, try to organise your knowledge. Dates, eras, names are so easy to misplace. 🌱

Great advice! Meticulous notes in an EXCEL sheet because my stubborn teen refuses to take detailed notes—too much school work and prep on other topics. So mom has been recruited;). I am a literature student so some of it comes back but I am enjoying delving deep into the history of everything and civilizations are fascinating! Phrygians, Elamites, Dorians, Kassites….still don’t have them all organized in my head!

Expand full comment

I was about the same age. Living on Long Island. Our dad was overseas, mom was worried but didn’t speak of it but even then everyone was aware, watching Kennedy on tv. I can remember waiting for my school bus one morning, thinking my brother was right. And first strike would kill us because of our proximity to nyc. Then got on the bus and went to school.

Wow Patris. I was living in Vancouver (Canada)....we spoke about 'going down into the basement' as if it was a bomb shelter, haha. It made me feel sick - as in, I probably couldn't eat. So even though I was really too young to understand what was going on, perhaps it was some kind of intuition. Anyhow - glad we are all still here!! xo

Amen!

Amazing when you think of it, isn’t it?

Expand full comment

How terrifying! 😞

We were numb. We’d been raised doing nuclear fire drills in grade school.?Hunching under our desks - or lining up in the school’s hallways, seated, our heads bent low under our arms.

Expand full comment

Yes, I was much later, when I started school but our teacher’s still included those old drills, (but it’d always been that way since first grade, so no one EVER asked!!) it’s strange isn’t it?

Maybe (if he was a dude) he was a perv and wanted to see little girl's asses. 😂🤔😂 You're so naive sometimes. 😉

Never knew this: Amazing--must be a story about how you found this out ... xx ~ Mary

Expand full comment

Mary, hi! I guess I could make a post about how long this story has been with me. It's incredible that this man, against all odds (and his superiors) had the nerve to stick to his belief and save the world in the process. And here we are, still hating Russia. Thank you! xox 🌹

Expand full comment

Do it! Gotta be a great reporting tale.

Expand full comment

I'd have to be a protagonist! And what did I do to be in the story? Zip! LOL. But I could write a post about human curiosity and why some people have it and some don't.

Expand full comment

More details in your story , thanks , Ray McGovern , ex CIA was just talking about this exact incredible incident. Fascinating !

Expand full comment

Oh, really. Do we believe in coincidences? 🌱✌️

Expand full comment

I’ve heard this story previously. It remains a very chilling event.

There were rumors a couple of decades back about how the Titian IIIc system was partially activated and available for use around the same timeframe. Maybe the details of those rumors will also surface over time and be at least equally as chilling.

Expand full comment

The difference with this particularly story is how close we came to actual annihilation. I doubt there'd be a repeat. Next time we might not be this lucky.

Expand full comment

Agreed. Maybe it’s better for people to understand what the fog of war actually is and how all similar actions ultimately boil down to the decisions taken by a very small number of individuals who are isolated in the moment. Fortitude and common sense are rare commodities.

I always love your stuff. My friend Catherine sent me the first one about the labrador dog bringing the leaf into the store to get something. So lovely.

Hahaha! Yeah, that was a good one (from the lab) 😂

do you have a dog?? Yikes we are like pen pals now.

Rene where do you live? I am sort of a writer also. That is to say - I wrote "The Book of Kale" - which was a national best seller in Canada. Used to write for garden magazines before they went extinct.

Expand full comment

Congrats! 🤩🎈🎉

Expand full comment

I really dislike kale, but it sounds like you created a great book; I devoured gardening magazines, in the years past. 😉 💐 Congratulations, Sharon! 👏

Expand full comment

Hi Michele! Thank you.....very kind. Kale tastes just fine if it freezes while in the ground. That is the primary reason it is maligned (or hated, haha)....sugar is nature's antifreeze. So the kale becomes sweet and tender ;-) Most of what we have in stores (here in Vancouver) is grown in California or Mexico, so, ugh.

Ah, I never knew that! Thank you for the information. ❤️

Expand full comment

loved your story. Would like references for such an important event.

Expand full comment

I could include some. Do you think people care that much about links?

Expand full comment

I liked your writing so much but would not promote Russian info without at least one or two references. Maybe it’s just me.

Expand full comment

Thank you! Very kind of you to say that. This, however, is not Russia's info. It's the history of the world, really. As a matter of fact, a comment above mentioned that an ex-CIA exec was just talking about it yesterday. 😎

Expand full comment

If this is the first time you’re hearing of this miraculous event, I totally understand why you’d want links. (May I ask is this really the first time?)

There are many… let me look!!!

Even when something is known, versions of history can be modified. I just asked for more simple references.

The Cuban missile crisis 1962. Or just his name: Vasily Arkhipov. Takes a split second!!!

Sadly, we are currently sitting on a similar knife's edge with lunatic Neocons in the White House, and they are reporting to a dementia-riddled President of the United States who is trailing badly in the polls. This is why we are one bad decision away from WWIII.

Are you voting for Trump? Do you think he's sane? This two party system is a disaster and I'm afraid it's the way they want it. Divide and conquer. :(

The Liberator

Expand full comment

Dude, what is your problem? You're drunk. Go home.

Expand full comment

You're asking me if Trump is sane after his highly successful policies followed by the disastrous policies of a brain-dead president who stole the '20 election and is destroying the country on multiple fronts??

I don't like Trump, but I like his policies. So, I voted for him the first time as a protest vote against the lies of the so-called Republicans over thirty years, and voted for him again due to his policies that were highly successful.

He was so successful that the Democrats, Leftists (yes, the two are different), globalists, media, bureaucracy (DOJ, Intel community, etc.) were scared to death of him because he couldn't be bought and could end their insider's game in a 2nd term (and don't bore me with the tired line that it wasn't stolen). So, they pulled out all the stops and continue to do so to stop him in various morally and ethically despicable, and downright illegal ways, and it will cost them in November, as he will win.

So, who's insane? Trump or the moral degenerates trying to jail him so they can continue their graft that is killing thousands upon thousands of military men and women in Ukraine and Russia every single month with no end in sight, the insane one and his jackals in the White House have an open door policy at our southern border, and crime is rampant in major cities?

As for how I vote, I am a registered Independent and have been for over 30 years once I realized that Republicans are Democrats in Republican clothing (RINOs), and that all they care about is their "cool job" and its cool perks. They care not one bit about the people, they only care about themselves. Republicans want to keep their jobs, and Democrats want to retain power. So, both parties work together to give each side what they most want.

And, no, I will not be voting in November because in all the battle ground states, the Secretaries of State, governors, state legislatures, courts at all levels including the Supreme Court, and the US Congress are doing almost nothing to fix a broken election system. Therefore, the election will be stolen again unless Trump wins by a margin so wide that it can't be stolen without the thieves getting caught. And you do not want to know what will happen if this one is stolen.

Did I answer your question? I am not MAGA, I am a disgusted conservative American watching my country circle the drain and nobody is doing a damn thing about it because those with the power have been bought by those whose lust for money is only exceeded by their own lust for power.

I enjoyed your story. Thank you. 😊

This had me on the edge of my seat, and reading, I was thinking, “Aren’t we close to this now?” The politics are all over the place! I don’t know what’s being said privately. Realistically, we could be close, so, it’s easily imagined.

Expand full comment

It depends whether you are "the glass is half full" or "half empty", type of person. I don't think we're nearly as close as what this story portraits.

Expand full comment

You’re right, but the story portrays a world that didn’t know! My parents were alive but I never heard about it! 2 yrs before I was even conceived!

This guy's life and courage should be taught in schools around the world.

However, he's like a lot of heroes who go unsung.

On WW2 discussion threads on the internet, 15-year-old boys of all ages wage flame wars over "Who's cooler? Rommel or Patton? Prove it."

The correct answer is "Neither. Both were mostly creations of their two countries' propaganda arms and are somewhat overrated in many areas, including logistics. The best Allied generals of World War II were Sir Richard O'Connor, Konstantin Rokossovsky, Matthew B. Ridgway, Guy Simonds, Sir Brian Horrocks, Jake Devers, Lucian Truscott, Vassili Chuikov, Bill Slim, Francis Tuker, Bob Eichelberger, Walter Krueger, and J. Lawton Collins, among others."

Outside of military academies and histories, nobody can name them.

Got what you're saying. My story is just another story, and you are right. This guy saved the world, though. :)
