In it, there's a book within a book called "The Inner Life of Martin Frost," about a man who falls in love with his muse, confusing her with a real woman. Auster later adapted it into a movie, which wasn't as good but still enjoyable if you're an Auster fan.
She likes to watch you go it alone in order to reinforce your acceptance. You need her :)
